Viva La Purpose!

I recently read a statistic that said only 12% of the people who make New Year's resolutions actually carry them all the way through. That's harsh. And sounds like a recipe for disaster. So this year, I decided to skip the resolutions. And that whole one word thing? I'm on board with it this year. I thought it could give me a little more focus in my writing, as well as my relationships and speaking engagements. (Last year, I was anti one word, you can read here!)

live with purpose

My hubby wanted to choose my word. He thought it should be focus. Because I'm a girl who is all over the board on things. Like in conversations, when you talk about the entire alphabet and bounce all around the numeric system too. Know what I mean? It's really just a chick thing, I told him. All ladies get random when they gather together for conversation. Ahem, I digress.

Focus was his word choice. Intention was mine. But then as I started reading through definitions of these words, I decided to choose purpose.

They are very similar words, so I feel like it's splitting hairs at this point. At first I thought, hey let's combine them and focus on intentionally being purposeful. But that's a mouthful!

The meaning and purpose of life isn't really that easy to figure out, is it? We are called to glorify God on this earth. And that's hard to always do with our sin nature getting in the way. But that's where Jesus comes into place. Christ can give us such a renewed focus and purpose and passion for worship and prayer when we lay it all down at the foot of the cross and just let Him carry our burdens.

They say your passion is tied to your purpose. And well, I'm passionate about Jesus. So this year, my focus is Jesus. And I'm going to continue to explore what His purposes are for me. The scripture verse that will guide me through this is based on trust.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and he will make straight your path."

{Proverbs 3: 5-6}

The last few years, I thought my purpose was to be a mom. And I was proven wrong. So instead of defining my self-worth in what I am not, or what I wish to be. I am going to focus on what already is. I am a wife. A friend. A follower of Christ. A radio personality. A writer. And well, we shall see where the Lord takes the rest. I trust that the Lord will work it all out for His glory!

He'll work it all out for you glory too friends. I know it!

Live life with purpose. You matter. God created you for wonderful things.

  2. What a great word! I'm still praying for my own. I'm starting to feel a bit like that little girl in the classroom who couldn't finish her assignment even when everyone else was already done...

  3. I think you are way too hard on yourself Joanna! This is the first year I have even done the One Word. :) But after a really hard year, I felt God wanted me to focus on what I am in Him, not what I had hoped to be. Blessings to you!

  5. Hi Nicki- Stopping by from the #RaRaLinkup. I love what you said, how you are going to focus on what you have and who you are. You are enough because He is enough.:) My word is actually two this year "Arise and Build" and the verse that goes along with it is Nehemiah 2:18 "Let us arise and build. So they put their hands to the good work." Happy 2015 as you explore His purpose!:)

  7. I like how you are focusing on what you already are. I think we can get so tied up in a wish of what we need to be that we can fall into discouragement. Thank you for bringing this to light and for giving us space. Much love to you. Cheering you on Nicki! Go girl!

  9. Wonderful word to focus on this year Donna! I had issues leaving a comment on your blog, but loved how you noted "I have always earnestly chosen high sounding words that smacked of self-improvement." Aren't we all guilty of that? Keep your focus on HIM and enjoy the celebration!

  10. Me. Go. Girl. Love it Kelly! Yes, it is a crazy thing, this world we live in, isn't it? And so easy for all of us to get tied up in the things of this world, instead of focusing on our identity in Christ. May we both continue to pursue our purpose this year and encourage one another. Blessings to you sweet lady! xoxo

  11. Every time I read your words I am instantly uplifted and encouraged. Nicki, I wish you lived closer so we could chat and encourage each other over coffee! Your one word is brilliant and thank you for reminding me that I have a purpose! My one word this year is 'reconciliation'. :) It is my first attempt at the one word thing too! :)

  16. Hello, Nikki! I'm joining you from Thought-Provoking Thursday at 3D Lessons for Life. I love your word - purpose. Sometimes we live as if God didn't have a plan when He created each of us. Finding purpose is honoring to our Creator! My word for the year is "presence". I want to be more aware of God's presence in my life and in the world around me. And, I intend to be "present" in each moment He's given me. Blessings to you on your journey!

  17. Purpose is a wonderful word to have for the year. I can think of no matter way to spend the year than by pursuing God intentionally with purpose. My word is "content" and so far it's proving to be challenging.

  19. You have faced some big challenges Barbie and I think taking a break from all the extras in life to keep your sanity is the right move and a wonderful way of remaining "content" right where God has you. You are currently placed where the Lord needs you and I will pray that you can rest in that today. Xoxo

  22. Love this! I don't do resolutions either, but I am doing the word thing too. My word is humility. My husband would have probably picked focus for me too since he thinks I'm all over the place. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Haha! My hubby still keeps saying "I really think you should have chosen purpose!" :) I think humility is an awesome word. And there are so many great examples of this found in Scripture. You are going to have a blast with that word Nicole!

  24. You are a wise, wise woman. To focus on the gift in the hand, to let your heart rest in the blessing ... this takes strong faith, nicki. Bless you as you live life purposefully.
