Unfulfilled Dreams

Life is a bit funny, isn't it? I mean, one minute you are 5 years old. Dreaming of the day you will be a big Hollywood actress, or a ballerina. Or maybe some totally kick butt rock star. And if that doesn't work out, maybe a princess, space explorer, firefighter, race car driver, mountain climber or doctor.

God has amazing things in store for your life.

And then the next day, out of the blue, it seems like you're OLD. You have responsibility. And lots of it. Bills to pay. A house to care for. A few gray hairs. A to do list a mile long. And what feels like (sometimes) no time for yourself. And gravity is no longer your friend.

I haven't made a dent in the list of my childhood dreams. Not even close.

Official reality check on those 5 year old dreams
I never learned to dance like a sugar plum fairy.
Though I can do a pretty mean funky chicken.
I haven't discover the cure for cancer.
Though I am 1.5 years thyroid cancer free.
I'm not on some famous TV show.
Though it is fun to be on the radio!
I don't rescue people from burning buildings.
Though I do like to watch that on TV.
Driving in circles at incredibly crazy speeds is not in my DNA.
Though getting stuck in roundabouts apparently is.
I have never climbed Mount Everest.
Though hiking to base camp is on my bucket list!

But I am loved.
Fearful and wonderfully made.
Created for a purpose.
Designed to change the world.

Maybe you have been reflecting on your life lately. Maybe you have been beating yourself up about the things you haven't accomplished.

Or like me, you think back to all the silly dreams of your 5 year old self. Maybe that bucket list seems a mile long because there is no time (or money) to accomplish most of it. Or you feel like "mommy" or "wife" or "daughter" or "caregiver" or "coworker" is the only identity you have at the moment.

Not true. There's still that 5 year old girl inside of you. She has big dreams. But here's even better news:

Those big dreams you have? They are nothing compared to what God has in store for you.

They are likely things you can't even fathom at this point in your life.

God has amazing things in store for your life!

Take some time this week and pray about what big accomplishment He is directing you toward.

Maybe it's to be a mom for the next 18 years of your life. If you ask me, that beats flying to the moon, climbing Everest or becoming some famous (likely drug addicted) international celebrity any day.

Your purpose is unique. Whatever it is you are doing. Right here. Right now. That's your purpose.

God has you in this role for a season and for a very special reason.

So get out there and show your 5 year old self that you are a rockstar. Own it.

Be a celebrity to the people in your life who love you and are counting on you.

  1. I love this post Nicki! I've been thinking along similar lines lately - where I thought I might be, and where God has me...and how much more important (and fulfilling) where He has me is. I'm also learning that peace comes with accepting and embracing where He has me right now!

  2. I haven't really made a huge dent on my childhood dream list. When I was 5 I got to fly in an airplane and loved the donuts they served. So I decided right then and there to become a flight attendant! ha! Sadly, I never gave that dream a second thought as I matured. But there are still some really passionate dreams that I've had to come to terms with as well, knowing they wouldn't come true. Like having a daughter (since I have three sons). But recently my oldest got engaged to the most lovely girl, inside and out, so maybe that dream has legs after all! With that in mine, I never want to give up on what God might redeem or resurrect in those dreams I have yet to capture. You've made me think about all the ways God has worked and will continue to work in my life, my friend! That's certainly where God is working most obviously in you! Love you AND love that graphic with the little girl, Nicki! You've got that artist's eye, don't you!

  4. Nicki, I haven't made a dent in my unfulfilled dreams. But as I reflected on your post, I realized I may have unfulfilled dreams yet my life is full :) It is so true that as we embrace what He has for us each day, we will find ourselves smack in the middle of His purposes for our lives. So grateful to have been here this morning!

  6. Yes Laura! Just trying to be content and patient where we are in life and living each moment for His glory is certainly work enough! :) Rewarding too! Blessings to you!

  7. I wanted to be so many things too as a young girl Beth! Flight attendant wasn't on that list, but I think donut maker could be :) I am so glad that God is redeeming your desire to have a daughter thru your future daughter in law. It is a blessing to see Him working in and thru us, and knowing that He can and will redeem even the saddest parts of our stories. I know that even my infertility story will be rewritten for His glory. Just in His timing and His way, which let's face it, is always better than what we picture anyways! Big hugs! (And clinking of chevron coffee cups!)

  9. It's such a hard thing to do, isn't it Joanne? Just to be content and happy where He has us, when sometimes our hearts are yearning for so much more. More of Him, less of us. That's all we need to find true contentment and purpose in this crazy life. Blessings to you friend!

  10. I am so glad you are finding contentment in your current season Nikki! Praise Jesus that we can learn to be content with the purposes we were created for right in this moment. It's something I am continuously learning, to just embrace more and more of Him in life. Right in the now.

  11. I didn't have a lot of dreams as as child other than to marry (which I did) and have children (which I did). I love knowing that God has a purpose for me right here and now, but that He's still in the dreams I have locked inside my heart too.

  19. Oh yes, those dreams. I've had them, and now that the mid 40's have hit, they've been eyed a bit more. God does have big plans, and I love that you included being a parent in this. You've posted a bit of beautiful encouragement in the blogosphere today.

  21. Oh the dreams we dream! I chuckled when you commented that the next day out of the blue you are old! When I look back on my life it is hard to believe how much life I have been privileged to live. I have been given one of the best dreams of being a mom and also have been able to live out my passion of teaching for 30 years. God is infinitely good!

  22. Glad you were able to find a little encouragement :)

  23. Amen to that Mary! He is good. All the time He is good! :) I like how you said privileged, it really is a privilege, isn't it, to be here on this earth, tasked to carry out His purposes? I love that you not only have known the joys of motherhood, but have used the word passion tied to your teaching! Keep on keeping on sistah! xoxo

  24. Thank you for this post! With 5 little ones and an overcrowded sometimes I forget that the 5 year old me needs a big ole' hug, and a knowing smile. I needed that. Maybe I'll ease up on thirty-something me. :)

  25. I've always had BIG dreams then the unexpected happened, I got pregnant at a very young age. And then I had to give up everything. All my children are adults now and I'm trying to find myself!!! This gives me HOPE that I can somehow still persue my DREAMS if GOD willing!

  26. Yes, ease up on your 30 year old self girlfriend! And hug that 5 year old all you can! :) xoxo

  29. I wanted to be a singer or a writer. Almost fifty years and many detours later, I lead the worship in our small Christian community and write almost every day. Not for a living (although that wouldn't be bad), but that doesn't matter, because ultimately I do it for His glory. Thanks for your encouragement!

  30. Great post Nicki! The Lord has taken me places I never imagined. Things I dreamed of having or being didn't satisfy nearly as much as the wonderful blessings and opportunities the Lord has me. Experience continues to teach me to trust more . . . watching for open doors rather than beating down closed doors. Blessings!

  32. Praise the Lord Milly! How cool is that story. Love it! Always for HIS glory. Amen to that sister! xoxo

  33. Isn't it funny how that works out, Deb? God always knows better than we do. Trusting is such a hard thing, especially in the particular season the hubs and I are in. Trusting that God's ways are best, when it comes to parenting, not always such an easy thing. But continuing to learn. I am so glad that you find joy in all the seasons of life. Your church is lucky to have Rev and you as great Godly role models. xoxo

  36. What a wonderful post! Such encouragement to reach for your dreams. God has promised to give us the desires of our heart....as long as they fall in line with His will for our lives. Your post encourages us to seek His heart about our dreams and then believe He will helps us accomplish them. Stopping in from #GraceTruth.

  37. It's the falling in line with His will part that's so hard to remember when we don't get what we want. Especially when it seems like His will and ours should align in certain situations. Trusting...such a hard, but faithful thing to do! Blessings!
